Teacher and Student Fight at Santa Monica High School
Mark Black, a science teacher and wrestling coach, was videotaped restraining a student who was allegedly selling drugs, according to www.nydailynews.com.
Students said the teen took the first punch hitting Black in the face.
The fight was recorded by a student in the classroom and shared online. Such fights are popular online. If someone were to go on YouTube and search “fights in the classroom” or “teacher and student fights”, several videos would show up.
The idea of a teacher fighting a student isn’t a good one by any means, a student, however, told a Los Angeles television station, “‘What’s the teacher supposed to do? Sit here and let a student beat him up?’” According to www.nydailynews.com
The question really is what a teacher should do in that type of situation. Maybe back away from the student and get the appropriate people to take care of the issue.
The superintendent of Santa Monica High School called the situation with the teacher and student “Unacceptable”.
Black was suspended from teaching and Santa Monica Police arrested two students.
Kurstin Fly-Dent, a freshmen at UHS, said, “I don’t see anything wrong with a teacher defending themselves against a student. Everyone has the right to protect themselves from harm. Teachers should not be excluded from self-protection when it comes to school settings.”
Another UHS student by the name of Corey Arnold, a freshmen, said, “I feel that Mark Black was right in protecting himself against the student, but there are better ways to go about it. Such ways need to be decided between the faculty and the student body to find out what’s appropriate.”
Fighting and violence in schools is nothing new, and this fight at Santa Monica High School is one of many that occur every day in high schools around the world. School is meant for educating, not fighting.
Faculty and students should work together to stop violence in schools.
