U of I Volleyball in the 2013 NCAA Tournament
“I didn’t think we’d host after losing to Minnesota. I knew there was a chance, but (I’m) a little surprised. But also thrilled. It’s nice to be at home,” said Illinois head coach Kevin Hambly in an interview with News-Gazette reporter, Jeff Huth.
The Illini ended the regular season with a mediocre 16-14 record, and although on paper the teams overall success in the season is quite debatable, you have to read between the lines to find the glory in their record. According to Hambly, in the same interview, “We had the toughest strength of schedule (in the nation).”
“I’m not really surprised that there wasn’t a huge win to loss difference because they (the Illini) lost most of their good players recently,” said UHS freshman Naomi Maehr. “I expected them to be halfway decent.”
No matter their record, though, the focus is now on continue on in the tournament past the Sweet 16. Since Illinois beat their first two opponents, they are guaranteed to play at home for up to an additional two more matches. The Illini beat Morehead St. in a three-set sweep on Dec. 6, and Marquette 3-1 on Dec. 8. Illinois will now face Purdue on Friday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at home.
“Teams are relentless now. They’re playing for their lives and there is no time to mess around at all. It’s very down to business and it’s really cool,” said Junior outside hitter Liz McMahon in the same interview with Huth. “[I’m] definitely really happy with the opportunity to play at Huff. Huff’s the best, and it’s just a great advantage.”
