What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of boxing or wrestling? Is it men punching, tackling, or hurting each other, as most would say? Although much of the above is very true about the sports, one thing is starting to change: Men are no longer the only competitors. As Urbana High School counselor, Marc Solodky says, “I believe the reason most men have a problem with women entering such physical sports is just intimidation.”

Women are starting to become more known to this industry, and with it, gone are the days of “what a women can do a man can do better.” The number of women joining these full contact sports is increasing daily, and even though is it frowned upon by many, but it is a big step for women everywhere the world over.
In the world of “male dominant” sports, it is hard for some men to adjust to the increasing role. But even with the struggle of acceptance from their fellow teammates, girls are becoming more prevalent in high school wrestling teams. UHS Freshman, Alexis Irvan-Sprague says, “I used to wrestle so I know how hard it can be. If they (women) have the strength to do it they should go for it.”
No one said it would be easy.
Getting in line with the trend, the United Fighting Championship (UFC), one of the largest mixed martial arts promoting company in the world, signed their first females ever on Septemeber 20, 2012, with Ronda Rousey and Dana White (the chairman for UFC) fighting along side the men.
Their hiring is a huge step for women in contact sports the world over, and at the current rate, women everywhere will be able to show their tough side sooner rather than latter, so men, watch out!
