“In This Moment” Review
The ideal heavy metal band has fast drums, loud guitar, and deep bass, brought together by a good singer. Though not many bands can boast having this, one that can is In This Moment.
Lead by front woman Maria Brink, with her singing and screaming mix of lyrics, Chris Howorth on lead guitar and back-up vocals, Jeff Fabb on drums, Blake Bunzel on rhythm guitar, and Travis Johnson on bass, this band started off small and climbed up the musical ladder.
Brink and Howorth met in Hollywood in 2005, and started making songs together soon after. Soon, the band had a deal with Century Media Records and released their first album, ‘Beautiful Tragedy’ in 2007. The band unfortunately didn’t go a way the members were happy with, so they stopped. They enlisted a few more and tried a second time, this time as In This Moment, mostly with their current line up.
As In This Moment, they made a demo; mostly of songs they have now re-recorded and put out on their albums, and posted them on MySpace. After their music broke out on My Space, Rob Nicholson from Ozzy Osbourne fame became their manager. Soon, the band had a deal with Century Media Records and released their first album ‘Beautiful Tragedy’ in 2007. Brink’s signature sound of sweet singing and heavy screaming was deeply incorporated with her lyrics of her personal experiences with abandonment and tragedy.
Followed by their singles “Prayers” and “Beautiful Tragedy”, the band’s first album did well for a first album.
Their next album, titled ‘The Dream’, was released in 2008. The album put the band in the Top 200 for the first time, placing them at number 73, and their single from the album “Forever” hit number 40 on the US charts. The band was in the spotlight, using a less heavy approach by focusing on cleaner, softer vocals from Maria.
The band’s most recent album, ‘A Star Crossed Wasteland’, was released in 2010. This one did better than their previous album, landing them number 40 on the Top 200 chart. The band sold 10,500 albums in the first week, due to their return of a more heavy and dark sound, and their lead vocalist winning the “Hottest Chick in Metal” award from Revolver Golden God awards in 2010.
The band has been on multiple tours and is currently with the bands Sevendust, Korn, and Disturbed on the second leg of their “Music As A Weapon 5” tour. The band is definitely something different from the norm on the radio.
UHS Senior Christian Swisher is a big fan of their music and discovered them in a movie. He said, “Her voice is beautiful, an amazing voice if I ever heard one.” Christian also said that he is totally satisfied with their sound, and he would recommend them to anyone who is a fan of heavier rock and loud music.
A little known band with a hot lead singer rises up to fame and leaves a mark on the heavy metal world. The screaming and the speed and sound of the band separates them from their associated acts. Their success is severely unknown, but everyone should give them a chance. Their second album is recommended if you are not a fan of heavier rock or metal, and their first album is for anyone who wants to hear how it all started. In This Moment is a band to remember in the coming years.
