Mr. Urbana Pageant

For the past four years, Business club has put on a pageant at Urbana High School. Mr. Urbana, an all boys pageant, was started in 2007 by Nancy Miller. Miller was President of Business Club in 2007 and came up with the idea for the pageant.

The show started because other schools were having pageants, and the Business Club thought UHS could hold a successful pageant that would rouse some school spirit. Mr. Urbana is a part of spring spirit week that consists of the powder puff game, student vs. staff game, and baseball vs. softball game.

Ms. Sherrick has taken over Business Club after Mr. Atchley retired last year. “I felt with Mr. Atchley retiring and two new teachers to the department, it would be best for someone with experience in business club to take over,” said Sherrick. Prior to Mr. Atchley, Sherrick was the Business Club sponsor for twelve years.

The pageant is a great way for the guys to show of their talents. So far, UHS has crowned three Mr. Urbana’s: Jared Kimball in 2007, Joel Williams in 2008 and Jordan Dimit in 2009. “The talent show gives the chance for guys in the school to get out there have fun,” said Junior Amanda Jacobs who is on the Mr. Urbana committee.

For the start of the show, all the contestants come out and do a choreographed dance. Maya Patterson choreographed this year’s dance. The Mr. Urbana pageant also consists of a questionnaire, talent portion, and school spirit portion, which is when the winner is announced.

“All the guys are either actually talented, or they are just funny and if they are hilarious. It’s fun to watch them make a fool of themselves,” said Sophomore Melinda Mendoza who enjoyed the pageant last year.

This year there are many entries including Austin Zarbauk, Luke Beal, Taylor Seten, Sean Grady, Abe Morris, John Seyler, Ashton Gwin and Nabeel Rizwan. “I decided to enter Mr. Urbana, because it’s my senior year and I want to make my senior year as memorable as possible,” said Senior Taylor Seten.

Come to Mr. Urbana on Thursday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. There is a three dollar cover charge, and the money will be used to help business club’s with future needs.
