Polar Plunge takes over UHS
On Friday, February 28, UHS hosted the first-ever Polar Plunge event on school grounds, where students and staff members plunged into a pool of water to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois.
The team of Urbana Special Educators raised over $2000 as a group, and Jevan Juday raised over $300 individually. As the highest earning student, Juday earned the opportunity to pie principal Jesse Guzman in the face!
Juday was part of a larger group of students calling themselves TLG, who raised over $1500.
They were not the only group, as Urbana Bands and JR MNNRS also worked as a team.

Senior Simone Aksimentyeva plunged with her club, JR MNNRS.
“I did it for a good cause. I’m also really dedicated to my club,” so they wanted to plunge together. “It was definitely worth it!” she said.
In total, UHS raised over $5000! Hosting the Cool School Polar Plunge also qualified UHS to become a Unified Champion School, which will open more doors for inclusivity between general education and special education students.
Organizer Melissa McMahon has big plans for the future, as well.
“Next year, we will be hosting a Unified Sports Day and Respect Week,” she said.
