Cheer loud, cheer proud!
The cheerleading squad is making a new name for themselves with the hiring of a new coach, Tierra Brown.
Brown has a heavy dance background, and she was also the head cheerleading coach for Danville High School for roughly 4 years. After coming to Urbana, she knew she wanted to give back to the school in any way that she could.
Junior Asha Williams wants to do the same.
“This year is different in the way that I’m a junior now, so I really feel as if I have to be a good role model and share my knowledge and experience with new girls who may need guidance or a big cheer sister!” Williams said.
The team and their coach have been working together and creating a connection since the summer with team bonding. Because of this, they are a very close-knit team who can rely on each other.
Sophomore Torriani Aldana wouldn’t want to have it any other way.
“The team is way more bonded, and I’m really looking forward to having us put out there to show off the improvements from last year!” she said.
Senior captain Helen De la Cruz has been cheering for both football and basketball for all 4 years of high school.
De la Cruz mentions that the season has been different from last year’s because “not only is the coach different, but it is my last year, so seeing our season through a senior’s perspective makes this year different from the rest.”
The team has really put in the work with having morning practices and working together to make the team a family.
Come out and support as you watch this team show off their hard work at this Friday’s football game at 7pm against Centennial!
