Club Chat: African American Club (AAC)
Introducing club chat! This column is where you’ll find what all the clubs in UHS are doing now and in the future.
This week’s feature is the African American club or AAC.
Each of the meetings begin with a segment called “Happy Crappy” where each of the members go around and say one good thing and one bad thing that happened or about the day. They follow that by debriefing about upcoming events and/or playing a game.
AAC is a well established UHS club with a continuous membership. Many appreciate the environment that AAC offers.
“I continuously go back to AAC because of the members and the forming community,” said senior Shamar Salter, AAC co-president.
AAC hosts and participates in many different community engagement events, including the DPW (Doctor Preston Williams elementary) community walk, where the group walks around the neighborhood and gives school supplies and resources to kids who need it. It is a heartwarming event that has helped many students in need.
Compassion runs through this club to make sure that no one is left out anywhere in this community, especially within our own walls.
“The goal of AAC is to make sure all of the African American students in the building feel included and welcomed at Urbana High School. We try to make sure that we are a safe space for all of our members,” said senior Kierra Moten, AAC co-president.
But don’t tune out yet! AAC has more cards in their deck for this year, some specific to the annual UHS Black History Month assembly.
“Our plans for the black history month assembly will include various performances that celebrate Black culture. We will be trying to implement as many different expressions of Black excellence to make sure the assembly is as best as possible,” added Moten.
