Since recent memory, the Urbana high school track team has been flooded with incredible athletes from all different classes, with a total of 118 track athletes signed up for the sport (at the time of this writing).

Senior Jackson Gilbert who was the 2022 state champion and 2023 team captain shared how he feels coming into the new season with a bunch of new faces.

“It’s something to look forward to. I train all year round to become the best athlete I can possibly be and hope to give the new people that mindset,” he said.

It seems to already be working on freshman Sorrell Darough who’s been doing track since middle school.

“It’s a new experience that I’m excited to be a part of. I’m excited to be working with the upperclassmen that have been running for years, and I want to be able to be a better athlete,” Darough said.

Athletes from different sports are coming out for track and field and have already found it to be one of their favorites they’ve done.

Junior Seth Pierson, who’s a first year track athlete says, “I’ve been playing sports my whole life, so it’s nothing I’m not used to. I’m looking forward to getting better in conditioning for football and improving in the events I’m currently in.”

The track and field team is not only an amazing sport to consider, but also a great place to build connections with people you’ve probably never thought you’d talk to. This Saturday, the indoor season will end with a state meet at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, but the outdoor season is just beginning.
