‘They didn’t even give us a chance’: AAC members speak out over showcase cancellation

The Black History Month Showcase scheduled for today during 2nd and 3rd period was canceled for today due to “possible threats and multiple fights” that occurred off-campus yesterday afternoon.

African American Club member and Showcase participant junior Amiyah Puryear-Abdullah feels everyone was given “false hope.” She is most upset because to her, the showcase was much more than entertainment.

“Black students had somewhere to go and be appreciated and they’ve taken that away,” she said.

Sophomore Nevaeh Haynes is also disappointed in the school’s decision to punish a large group of students for the actions of a few.

“This was our one chance to do something great for our community…but they didn’t even give us a chance to show what we’re capable of,” she said.

Sophomore Omiyah Hill feels “very upset and angry because we put so much hard work into the assembly” including weekends practicing and buying clothing, costumes, and materials.

According to Hill, this is the third time the showcase has been pushed back.

As of now, there is no firm date for the Black History Month showcase, but there is hope that soon there will be a time we can appreciate all the hard work the African American Club, music department, dance team, and other organizations have put into the showcase.
