Is soccer the new football?
For the second year in row, UHS hasn’t had a varsity football team. Instead of playing on Friday nights, the team is playing on Mondays, leading many to change their after school plans. Football has always been a very popular sport at UHS, but this year soccer seems to be taking its place.
“Nobody watches football anymore because we don’t have a varsity team. Soccer does have a varsity team, so I think that honestly makes people more likely to watch it,” said sophomore Courtney Phillips. “Also I enjoy soccer more than football because in soccer you can see their faces and in football you can’t because they are all wearing helmets. A lot of people still like football but not as much as soccer nowadays; soccer is on the rise.”
Sophomore Kaylin Bell disagrees. “I don’t think that soccer is the new football because I think that football and soccer are separate sports that don’t go against each other. Football will always be number one for me.”
In the 2000’s, rom-com movies always show high schoolers talking about wanting to go to the football games, but Elisia Ramos wouldn’t be one of those characters.
“I think that soccer is just more entertaining and I think that football is honestly overrated,” she said.
Soccer might be the new thing, but football might still be up there. A lot of different opinions floating around UHS, what do you think?
