The Draft: A lottery you want to lose?
The United States Conscription, also known as the draft, is a forced military enrollment that all young men must enter at age 18. It is a lottery based on the men’s birthdays.
Due to the draft being mandatory and having been used in a lot of past wars including World Wars 1 and 2, the Korean war and the Vietnam war, boys will joke around the serious fact that a draft is undoubtedly possible, even with laws in place to lower the odds.
Of course with the recent events of the new year, it is a subject that must be approached.
Senior Dylan Carter’s response was one against it. “I would not be happy at all because I have been ripped from my family and the ones I love dearly.”
As for senior Jonny Lujano, it holds little to no effect because “if I was ever [drafted] I wouldn’t feel any different. I would be a little scared, but if I’m willing to help out my family then I am willing to do so.”
With the thought of the draft circulating, people must begin to question whether or not another war is plausible.
Carter feels the draft will not be needed; he believes our country will not engage in a war that it can’t currently handle. “War with Iran will not happen because they’re friends with Russia,” he says.
Even if there is a war, Lujano feels as though a draft would be unnecessary. “We haven’t had a draft since Vietnam and since that happened our military has increased a lot through the years,” he says.
In agreement with Lujano, senior Max Wilson believes our army is large enough to avoid a draft. “We already have so many troops and there are tons of people joining.”
War has been present since the start of America’s history, with every century being marked by at least one large war. The question that must be asked is, could this be the start of this century’s?
