Senior day off
This Tuesday, Urbana High School students will be taking the PSAT and the SAT to help prepare them for their futures. However, the class of 2019 has already taken the SAT and many seniors have already been accepted to colleges and are on their way to the next chapter. So what do they do while the rest of the grade levels are testing?
Seniors have the day off. However, they were provided with a set of three college/career oriented options to do to be counted as an excused for the day. The options include job shadowing, volunteering/working, visiting colleges, or filling out college applications and scholarships.
Travis Courson, Associate Principal Curriculum and Instruction, speaks in favor of the College/Career experiences, “I think it’s a nice piece for all students to have before they graduate. Some sort of job shadowing or volunteer work gives them an idea of what the future will hold.”
Seniors were given the paper this past week in homeroom and are already making plans.
“I’m probably going to go intern at a massage parlor,” Desiree Bryant says. “That’s what I want to do for my career.”
Finn Dallas is also job shadowing. “I was going to job shadow at the law firm I work at. I’m considering [law] and keeping my options open.”
Katie Thies is using the day to her advantage. “I’ll probably pick up an extra shift at work.”
Some seniors are in favor of the College/Career experience day.
“I think it’s the best way I could spend a school day,” Jamison says.
Dallas agrees the day is a good idea, but wishes there was more preparation put into it. “I wish they would have given us more time or provided us with [job shadowing/volunteering] options.”
“They’re not asking too much of us,” Bryant remarks. “They’re just asking us to fill out that form as proof that we went there and turn it in,”
However some think the day is unnecessary.
Elin Skottene states, “I feel like they’re shoving it down people’s throats that we need to get ready for college when most of us have already sent college applications in and have jobs.”
Thies holds similar views, “I think it’s a waste of time because if you’re going to give us the day off just go the whole way. There’s no way to make absolute certain kids are going to do what they’re supposed to be doing.”
Whichever way you see it, seniors have it good in comparison to those testing tomorrow.
