Executive Internship Program begins for Urbana seniors
Joelle Busby, Meg’s Riding Academy
Joelle Busby is interning at Meg’s Riding Academy in Tolono, and works in equine business. Busby says, “I chose to intern here because I’ve always had a passion for animals and I do [horse] jumping for sport. So working with horses and learning the practices in training and barn management sounded like a great placement for me.” Busby is in charge of barn management, which involves taking care of and feeding horses, moving the 20 horses to where they need to be for lessons and feeding, and helping teach kids the basics of riding.
Dylan Patel, State Senator’s Office
Dylan Patel interns at the State Senator’s Office, with Senator Scott Bennett. Patel says he chose this placement to “see if I was interested in politics, specifically passing legislation and laws.” Patel is rarely ever in one place for too long at his placement. “At my internship, I do different things every day. For example, we have sent out state senator recommendations for outstanding citizens in the Champaign-Urbana district, we have attended Chamber of Commerce meetings, and we have gone to Westville to help kids make Valentines Day for wounded veterans,” says Patel.
Destinie Spurlock, Christie Clinic
Destinie Spurlock works in the OB-GYN department at Christie Clinic in Urbana. Spurlock was interested in the medical field, but was unable to choose exactly where she was placed. Spurlock says, “At my placement, I get to observe different procedures, such as birth control implants, infertility procedures, and sonograms.”
Although interns do not get paid, the program provides work experience that most high school students do not have an opportunity to obtain. If you have any questions about how to join the executive internship program, please contact Ms. Kristine Sherrick.
