Extinction of Chief Wahoo
Indians owner Paul Dolan and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred agreed to terminate the logo that has been around since 1947 and became a staple in Northeast Ohio. The discussions arose after Cleveland was awarded the 2019 All-Star Game and the controversial logo brought up talks of racism, an image the MLB felt needed to be terminated.
As Manfred stated, “Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game.” He later went on to say that “The club ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball.”
This marks a decisive change in the culture of the MLB. Recent discussions in other sports show that times are changing and the controversial figures of the past may no longer be tolerated in sports.
From what I was taught, there are only 3 races of humans. The “Indians” would fall into the Caucasian race. Is it possible to be racist against ones own race?
On a side note, why does Florida State still get to use their Seminole “mascot”?
