Since 2011, when Tunisia’s president, Ben Ali, left office there have been three primary successes for women in Tunisia:

Passage of the Law on Eliminating Violence Against Women, a law that protects women from domestic violence.
The uplifting of the ban of Muslim women marrying Non-Muslims, as stated from the new President Ben Caid, the ban as old as 44 years old was an existing practice that violated Tunisia’s constitution
The first vice president of the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia is Meherzia Labidi, one of the many women working within the political establishment.
The creation of academy Aswat Nissa by Ikram Ben Said, where Tunisian women develop their skills for politics in the country’s young and new democracy.

With the future of feminism improving, Ikram Ben says, “For me, feminism is liberating women and liberating women is offering the opportunities and allowing them to choose.”

So what would UHS students choose to do as future female leaders?

Aiah Radwan says if she had the power to change something she’d use that power to focus on unpopular topics that get brisked away in media.

“We need to focus on sexual assault and how we as a society still shame women,” Radwan states.

Kalika Shapiro believes “that women around the world deserve to be treated humanely and with respect, no matter their religion, race, sexuality or beliefs.”

If Shapiro was elected into office, she would focus on educating the following generation into not being so prejudiced; fixing the wage gap; and focusing on consent and sexual assault.

Tunisia’s on going fight for women’s equality is evidence to support UHS students’ belief that there is space enough for the Feminist Community to grow.

Now the question is how will you choose to move forward?
