Everyone Knows About Trump, But Who’s Our Vice President?
Pence was born June 7, 1959 in Columbus, Indiana. He graduated from Hanover College and earned a law degree from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Pence was elected to the United States Congress in 2000.
Pence is a Republican who shares many values with President Donald Trump. “I am a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order,” Pence says.
Over the years, Pence has made it very clear that he is pro-life. In 2007, he began seeking to defund Planned Parenthood. Pence also expressed his desire to ban condoms because they are “a very, very poor protection against sexually transmitted diseases,” and because he claims they lead to abortions. In 2002, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell stated in a speech that it was important for young people to protect themselves from STDs through the use of condoms, to which Pence replied by expressing his support for abstinence-based education.
As a self-proclaimed Christian extremist, Pence is also against expanding LGBT rights. He has said that he doesn’t believe homosexuals should be allowed to serve in the military, saying “the presence of homosexuals in the ranks weakens the unit cohesion.” In 2007, he voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which was meant to ban discrimination against the LGBT community by employers.
In 2006, Pence presented his “No Amnesty Immigration Reform” immigration plan which included strict enforcement of laws against hiring undocumented immigrants and greatly increased border security. Pence voted against the DREAM Act in 2010, which would have served to grant certain children of undocumented workers conditional nonimmigrant status.
So why should people care about Pence? As Vice President, he is second in command, and his actions and decisions will have a large impact on this country.
