Artist Spotlight: Ivan Mineyev
Today’s Artist Spotlight features a drawing by Ivan Mineyev. He spent a very long time on this piece of art, which is a brilliant representation of hard work and determination.
“It means that if you are determined to do something, to never give up until you finish doing it.”
He says that his picture “has only 32 lines and 33 circles in it, but every single one of them had to be drawn perfectly, because if it was even a little crooked, the end result would not be symmetrical.”
Clearly all of the thought he put into it really paid off.
Great work, Ivan!
I love it. I really enjoy how when I look at it, it gives the subtle illusion of movement – like shifting flower petals. I also would have loved to hear more about the process of creating it. Was it freehand? Use of a protractor? Etc…
It’s wonderful!
Thank you. I used a ruler, compass and a pencil to draw the sketch of the drawing. I started the sketch with the large outer circle, and divided it into 32 equal parts (using a compass and ruler). Then, I drew at least 40 smaller circles inside the original one to create the small triangles as you can see in the drawing. After the sketch, I used a pen to go over the pencil marks and to draw a border to the little triangles that I would later color black. Finally, after the borders were created, it was easier to shade in the triangles in an alternating fashion (black and white) with a normal black marker without messing up. (I colored the smallest triangles only with black pen because even the thinnest marker I could find would not fit in.) I would say I’m a perfectionist, so I took my time and drew it very carefully, and it was really worth it.
