“They’ve won since freshman year, and they’re gonna win again this year since they’re so good.” says freshman Mackenzie Pohlmann-Rucker, predicting the Class of 2017 as the winners of this year’s “Out of This World” themed float building.

When Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Stephen Waller began to announce the winner as “defending their four-year streak,” many students’ predictions were verified and the Senior Class broke out into a celebratory chant.

“They win every year,” says junior Mikayla Johnson. “They’ve got some pretty creative people and they have more school spirit than the other grades. They’re naturally good and the (past years’) Seniors got mad that they got 2nd or 3rd.”

Still, the Seniors had stiff competition this year. The Freshman float included a big yellow star with a ‘U’ on it, the Sophomore float included a rocket and a solar system with a sun, the Junior float was a giant rocket.

The winning Senior float included a tiger with a lightsaber fighting a Danville viking with the text, “The Final Chapter.”

“We’re the best! 2017, woo woo woo!” says senior Maya Mosley when asked on the success of the winning float. “Seriously, the 3D aspect of it.”

All the classes worked hard for a pizza-fueled session of three days, totaling over 10 hours.

“The pizza was good and float building is very lit,” stated sophomore Megan Rucker.

This was Rucker’s first year of float building. When questioned on why she didn’t participate last year, Rucker replied, “I didn’t know there was going to be pizza.” She also described float building as, “Love at first sight,”

Mosley and Pohlmann both declared their favorite part of float building as seeing the result.“Everything you did just comes together,” states Pohlmann.

It’s not just the students who get into float building, though. Sophomore Class sponsor Felicia Tufano, who has helped with float building for four years, says she enjoys the process as well.

“I’m not in charge of people. You get to know them on a different level,” she admits. “Class is business and here it’s just to have fun.”

Sadly, the parade was cancelled and the floats were thrown away without getting much visibility, but we  can still look forward to next year. With the Seniors out of the running, who knows which class will come out on top.
