Urbana Hosts Boys Swimming and Diving Sectionals
Last year, Urbana High School hosted the Girls Swimming and Diving Sectional with the help of volunteering from parents, faculty at Urbana High, and many students looking to fulfill volunteering commitments. The same will be true this year when Urbana hosts the Boy Sectionals.
Urbana has been preparing to host sectionals for many weeks, but especially in the last two. As of recently, with the help of the UHS boys’ team, and the Swim team boosters club, supplies for the meet are starting to flow in. Each athlete’s family was asked to bring an item, or items, for the concessions stand and to help supply food for the officials and timers at the meet. Along with bringing food items, Urbana has recently been searching for volunteers to help run the meet. At UHS, a request for volunteers to aid in timing at the meet has been put out in the morning announcements.
“It’s a lot of work having to host sectionals, but it’s a great experience and gives our swimmers a home field advantage,” said Head Coach Joel Williams.
Along with Urbana having a home field, or pool, advantage, the school, and team will also profit from holding the event. At every sectional there is a booklet containing the rosters of every team along with record holders and other various facts, but within the booklet ads are available in which local businesses have paid Urbana to be featured in. Along with that, the concessions and entrance fees are big money makers for the program and the school.
“It’s awesome being able to host sectionals at Urbana my senior year, plus it raises money for the team which is always a plus,” said Senior Evan Lovell.
