There’s New Royalty in KC
“I would never have expected the Royals to make the playoffs this year” said Urbana teacher, Brian McAndrew, “I was a Royals fan as a kid, but when I moved here they became stinky.”
After qualifying for the American League Wild Card game which is the first round of the playoffs on September 30, the Royals won that game in dramatic fashion against the Oakland Athletics. After falling behind 7-3, the Royals were able to rally in the 8th inning and pull out the win 9-8 in the 12th inning.
The next series that the Royals moved on to was the American League Divisional Series, or ALDS where they proceeded to sweep the Anaheim Angels in 3 games in the best of 5 series. This group of wins was a surprise to many because the Angels had finished the regular season with the best record in the majors.
“After not being a major threat for so long, it is great to see how they are playing so well” said long time Royals fan and Urbana Senior, Nick Romito.
Many other fans are also hopped on the Royals bandwagon as they then played in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Baltimore Orioles. There they surprised the baseball community yet again as they proceeded to sweep the Orioles in four games to make it to the World Series and set a major league record of 8 straight wins to start the postseason, which beats the previous best of seven set by the 2007 Colorado Rockies.
“You can’t predict stuff like this man” said Kansas City reliever Danny Duffy, as reported by the Washington Post.
The World Series starts this Tuesday in Kansas City as the Royals will take on the San Francisco Giants who will be a tough challenge to overcome. The Giants have won the World Series in both 2010 and 2012 and have won eight straight postseason series.
Even though they have a team with much less playoff experience, their postseason run has rallied support from many neutral fans and has given them momentum to make baseball history.
