Homelessness in the World
People from all the walks of life are homeless. Twenty-five percent of homeless people are actually employed, according to studentsagainsthunger.org, but living in large cities can be very expensive.
Student homelessness has risen 8 percent from the previous year in public pre-schools and grades K through 12, according to studentagainsthunger.org. The reality of the increase in homelessness in students is sad and unfortunate. Many children do not want to tell people about their situation for the chance that they could get taken away from their parents.
There are several factors as to why people become homeless. One reason people are homeless is because of economics. It’s sometimes just too expensive to live in certain areas. Another factor is for political reasons. Most homeless people don’t vote, according to Huffington Post, and for such reasons are not empowered. Also, people can be homeless because of social and medical reasons. Parents can kick students out and medical bills can get so expensive people can’t afford their homes.
Jerry Norvell, a homeless man on a street in Chicago outside U.S. Cellular Field after a White Sox game, said, “The rise in student homelessness is because of the depression. Money we used to get we don’t get anymore. I was working a job for 20 years and they no longer paid me major. I lost my house and they kicked me out. Now I’ve been homeless for four and a half months. It would be good if people made more programs for the homeless shelters. Most shelters are full.’’
This problem won’t go away unless people work on helping the homeless. People with nowhere to go are no different than people who have a home. Homelessness should be addressed so people can be helped and finally have a place to call home.
