On Saturday, Sept 6, the very first pride parade took downtown Champaign by storm. Champaign-Urbana Pride Festival has been going for five years now, however, this year was the first year that the festival included a parade.

Tyler David, senior and President of Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), said, “The CU pride festival brings together Champaign-Urbana’s LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning) community, creating a much needed support network for all of those who identify as LGBTQ in the area.”

After the parade, many went to the booths that were set up at the end of the parade to learn about all the different organizations that participated in the parade and festival.

One such booth was our very own GSA club at Urbana High School. They were able to talk about what their club does and how it can impact the student body.

Kim Summers, an English teacher at UHS, said “I felt an overwhelming sense of admiration for the UHS students and teachers who attended the Pride Festival to show their support.”

The atmosphere at the festival was one that was filled with laughter, joy and above all else, pride in who you are as a person.
David said, “I felt a sense of community, connecting with others, both LGBTQ and ally, and all the support we got as high school activists.”

Free spirited people walked the streets, being themselves, mingling with people from all walks of life. The diversity among all the people there was truly amazing. When at the parade, there were no racial, economic, or ethnic barriers between people. Everyone just came together to celebrate his or her own unique individuality.
