Lindsey Vonn Will Not Compete in Sochi Olympics
On January 7th, Vonn posted on her official Facebook account “I am devastated to announce that I will not be able to compete in Sochi. I did everything I possibly could to somehow get strong enough to overcome having no ACL but the reality has sunk in that my knee is just too unstable to compete at this level. I’m having surgery soon so that I can be ready for the world championships at home in Vail next February…” Since her post on Facebook in the first week on January, Lindsey has undergone successful ACL reconstruction surgery.
If Vonn makes a complete recovery and stays injury free, she should have plenty of time to train for the World Championships next February. At the last Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Vonn won the gold medal in downhill skiing making herself the only American female to ever do so, her not competing in Sochi is prospected to be a big hit to the Olympic women’s team and even to ratings when the Olympics are broadcasted over American television.
When asked, Junior Keith Lee said, “Since she’s such a big star because of being the only American to win Gold in an Olympic event, the American team is losing a very highly potential medal earner.”
When asked the same question to Sophomore Brenna Swartz she said “Without Vonn in the Olympics the U.S is taking a huge hit in an event, and also losing a big face in the world of skiing, who also brings major popularity to the sport.”
Hopefully, Vonn will experience a full recovery and return to major competitions in the future.
