A lot of women, and even a few men, love to get their nails done. However, only a few people actually know about the dangers within the harmful chemicals a majority of nail polishes give off. There are multiple risks in getting nails done constantly both dangerous to the consumer as well as future generations.

There are many different toxins such as aromatic solvent toluene, dibutyl phthalate, and formaldehyde infused in the actual nail polish and the nail polish removers. When pregnant women go to get her nails done, there is a chance that the unborn baby could be injured by the toxins the mother breathes in. The child could be born with breathing issues, visual problems, and birth defects.

Gel manicures have become very popular because they last much longer and they don’t chip as easily. The UV lights used have lead to an increase in the risk of skin cancer. Although the chance of getting skin cancer from the UV lights is highly unlikely, the Skin Cancer Foundation still warns people to be careful.

There is a way that people can be much safer. There are non-toxic water based nail polishes that are available for use. The water based nail polishes don’t give off any odors. They can be removed with rubbing alcohol. Unlike the solvent based polishes the water-based polishes are made from water-miscible acrylic, non-ionic soaps and polyurethane formers and thickeners. All of which are harmless on nail enamel.

As odd as it may seem today, there are plenty of men who don’t mind getting their nails done. There was once a time when a man getting his nails done was just a part of investing in his appearance. Men would go and get their nails done as often as they went to get their haircut.

Matthew Murray, the librarian of Urbana High School, says,” It’s uncommon, but I don’t see anything wrong with it. I see a lot of men that need to go to get their nails done.”

Manicurists are trained to be able to handle all nails no matter how bad they may seem. No one should feel uncomfortable about the appearance of his or her feet or hands when it could be helped.

Kevin Kennedy, math teacher, said, “It’s not something I’ve heard very often. I guess in our culture it’s more women that focus on their appearance not men. I see nothing wrong with it, I guess it’s just an appearance thing.”

How a person feels about guys getting their nails done just depends on the point of view they approach the topic with. Men and women alike should take the risks of getting their nails done before each manicure.
