Mayweather defeats Saul “Canelo” Alvarez
There was one main lesson Alvarez learned on Saturday night: Mayweather is fast as ever. He seemed to be a step in front of Canelo all night, and the young Mexican couldn’t seem to keep up. Mayweather’s signature defense was still in top shape, and Canelo was only able to land a few power shots throughout the fight.
Fatigue also seemed to play a role in Alvarez’s poor performance. He was visibly exhausted by the end of the fight, while Mayweather appeared to have enough energy for many more rounds of toying with Canelo.
Even after what seemed to be 12 rounds of domination from Floyd Mayweather, one judge scored the bout 114-114; a draw. This decision will surely spark controversy in the boxing world, including questions about this credibility of this judge, C.J. Ross.
Perhaps someday a young fighter like Canelo will be the new pound-for-pound champion of the world, but after last night it appears this won’t be the case as long as Floyd “Money” Mayweather is still around, who lived up to his nickname last Saturday making a guaranteed 41.5 million dollars from the fight, and surely much more once the money from the pay-per-view customers comes in.
The undercard fight of Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse proved to be less one sided and more entertaining, as underdog Garcia performed spectacularly and won the unanimous decision over Argentinian Lucas Matthysse, who had knocked down all of his opponents until Garcia. Although Matthysse appeared slightly more in control in the early rounds, swelling over his right eye and a lot of skill and hard work from Garcia were enough to persuade the judges towards the unanimous decision. There has already been talk of Garcia being Mayweather’s next opponent after his outstanding performance on Saturday.
Mayweather eased his way through yet another opponent, even an opponent some were calling his toughest competition in years. Mayweather yet again disproved any claims regarding his old age having an effect on his game, and showed the world why he is still the pound-for-pound champion of the world. For the time being, Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains unbeatable.
