As the weather gets warmer, students can sometimes feel a change in the school climate, also. Referrals begin to rise as people get anxious for break and start to challenge the rules and authority here at UHS. Many students receive referrals throughout the year, but before break the numbers tend to climb.

Some students and staff here at UHS were asked why they believe the numbers climb right before breaks, and they had similar answers.

“Because people are excited to leave school, so they start acting bad,” said freshman Millie Zachary.

“Because people think they won’t get in trouble after break,” said sophomore Brea Eskridge.

“I think it’s because there’s a lot of anxiety that the kids are dealing with, because it’s so close to the time they are anticipating. There’s high energy as the kids begin to wait for the break, and sometimes it’s difficult for them to channel that anxiety in a positive way,” said Eric Morrow. UHS dean.

In the three weeks before Thanksgiving break, the number of referrals soared. Thirty five in the first week out of the three, 35 in the following week, and 30 in the week right before the break. A similar thing occurred right before winter break. The three weeks before that, the numbers were 28, 38, and then 15 referrals.

These numbers may be due to the fact that each of those weeks were short weeks for the students.

Referrals go up in the weeks before break and, though the reason isn’t confirmed, we have a pretty good idea. So remember, next time a break is coming up, think about all of the referrals being given.

  1. Shelbie, this article is really good! It has good facts, and really good quotes. I liked reading it because our school was a bit hectic before break and this helps me understand a bit more why that was.

  2. This is very interesting. I see people getting sent out all the time. But I feel referrals wouldn’t be so high if we didn’t have subs

  3. This is a good article! I do agree with you on the kids acting worse when breaks are around, especially summer break.
