On Feb. 17, 2013 UHS star athlete Cameron Mammen brought home the wrestling state title championship after a long weekend of intense wrestling matches at the Assembly Hall.
Many people were present, including his close friends Myles Kelly and Miguel Fierro, along with father Mark Mammen and his mom.

Over the years, Mammen has continued the Mammen legacy at Urbana High School with his recent football playoff win and winning attitude in wrestling.

“He’s the athlete that brought an underdog attitude to every game and match,” said senior Myles Kelly.

Off the athletic platform, Mammen is a “great friend who always had my back,” added senior Miguel Fierro.

Now that he is a senior, many at Urbana High School will miss his athletic displays and friendship. To be at a state level of competition, you have to be well prepared and hands-down great at what you do. Athletically, Mammen has been through a lot.

At the competition Mammen said that he “treated the championship match like it was any other tournament.”

This mindset was necessary for state because he “worked on every little thing he had weakness on.” With confidence and hard work, Mammen knew he was prepared.

The 5-foot-11, 170 pound wrestler, also known as “Cam Goes Ham,” started off the match by taking an 11 point lead before defeating his opponent. Afterwards, Mammen closed with a fancy flip, which lead to his state victory, that included running around the mat in celebration and throwing up the famous “U.”

After the win was made official, Mammen ran in to the arms of his father, Mark Mammen. Along with Mr. Mammen, who has been one of Mammen’s strongest supporters, coach Charles Trabaris, or “Coach T” as many call him, was there.

Trabaris has been coaching Mammen for as long as he can remember. When Mammen reeled in the state victory, Trabaris said he was “very happy for him.”

Winning state meant that all the hard work and extra hours put in finally paid off.

Through the years, Trabaris has seen Mammen “grow and mature” into the young man he is today. “It goes to show you that success is much better when you work hard.”

Now a senior, Mammen plans to play football at Malone College and pursue his life goals. The state championship meant that all his hard work paid off.

“It is every high schooler’s dream,” said Mammen. “And to win means a lot to me.”

Mammen will leave Urbana not only as one of the schools best athletes, but also as a leader.
