North Korea: Attempt to Bomb United States
North Korea, led by Kim Jong-un, is attempting to bomb the Unites States yet again. They recently announced the testing of long-range rockets with satellites and warheads, as well as releasing footage of a U.S. city being bombed. In 2009, they claimed to be ready to wipe the U.S. off the map and now they appear to be a step closer.
The United States and North Korea have been enemies since the Korean War, when the United States allied with South Korea to fight North Korea and China. The Korean War ended in a truce; not a peace treaty. The peninsula was divided and turned into one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world, with the United States having 28,000 troops on the border, which North Korea claims they need nuclear weapons to defend.
In October 2006, North Korea conducted its first underground nuclear test, and in May 2009 it conducted a second. The United Nations condemned North Korea, describing the 2009 test as an intercontinental ballistic missile test. North Korea, in response, threatened to carry out yet another nuclear test and said that it launched a rocket carrying the Kwangmyŏngsŏng-2 satellite.
In 2009, North Korea made threats to wipe out the United States, claiming it had the military power, but took no action. Experts say it is only threating to appear strong in a time of weakness, since it lacks so many things, such as food.
On Jan. 24, 2013, North Korea warned of a third nuclear test, saying it would launch long-range rockets with satellites and warheads designed to strike the United States.
“Settling accounts with the U.S. needs to be done with force, not with words, as it regards jungle law as the rule of its survival,” said North Korea’s defense commission.
