A 23-year-old woman was viciously gang-raped on a public bus in northern India on Dec. 16, 2012. She was then dropped off at her village in the Gurdaspur district in the Punjab state.

The young victim died 12 days later in a hospital in Singapore after having severe organ failure. Her name has not been released to the public.

Thousands rioted on the streets of New Delhi for the execution of the men that committed this crime.

Five men were charged with murder, rape and kidnapping, and face the death penalty if convicted. A sixth suspect is believed to be a minor.

Urbana High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Coordinator Greg Hall said, “I just believe that they should receive harsh punishment so they don’t commit another crime like this. If I would have been on the bus I would have immediately called authorities and physically tried to stop the incident from happening.”

This incident has stirred riots in the streets, demanding a quick trial of the alleged rapists and better safety for women in India. Many people were injured as the police and protesters clashed in the streets.

The number of reported rapes in India is enormous. There were 572 rapes reported in 2011 in New Delhi alone, and over 600 reports in 2012. The citizens of India want this number to go down and demand more laws to protect women and prevent these types of incidents from happening again.

The entire world is shocked by this tragic event and wants a change in India. If we all look out for each other, we can prevent this from happening and make a difference in our world.
