Lance Armstrong Legacy Ruined?
Lance Armstrong became an American hero for winning seven Tour de France titles right after he beat the fight against cancer between the years 1999 and 2005. He also is known for starting the Livestrong Foundation, which is an organization that helps individuals fight against cancer. The Livestrong Foundation has raised an astonishing 470 million dollars since 1997.
Some people say his legacy is ruined. Sophomore Alejandro Ruiz said, “I think this is a fair punishment for Lance. He lied to everybody and made us believe he won the races fair and square.”
In my opinion, this is a fair punishment, but his legacy is not ruined. He didn’t win the races fairly, but he has made a big impact on the battle against cancer by helping a lot of people defeat this horrible disease. Some of Lance Armstrong’s sponsors such as Nike, Oakley, and Anheuser-Busch said they are sticking with Lance and that their relationship hasn’t changed.
Even though this is a very ugly situation for Lance, he doesn’t seem to be worried about it. He said, “Going forward, I am going to devote myself to raising my five beautiful (and energetic) kids, fighting cancer, and attempting to be the fittest 40-year-old on the planet.”
That is certainly a good sign for the once king of cycling. He and the Livestrong Foundation will continue to help individuals fight cancer and make the world a better place for everybody.
Although some people believe that his legacy is ruined, others seem to disagree. Sophomore Sebastian Mora said, “for all that he has done in the fight against cancer, he will not be forgotten… He has done a lot.”
Like the great Robert Frost once said, “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.”
