This year, the Champaign-Urbana area is host to their third year of the Gay Pride Festival. The festival is free to enter, and is being held at Lincoln Square Mall on September 8. There is a murder mystery dinner the Friday night before, and a “Drag Brunch” the Sunday morning after. The festival itself goes from noon on Friday to 2:00 a.m. on Saturday.

As any festival, there is certain to be plenty of live music. Two popular local bands, “The Mourning After” and “The Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra,” are going to perform. Jariko, a performer originally from the nearby town of Danville, will also be playing. Some of the slightly less music oriented events will be Carnivale Debauche, and Classy Combinations and Gypsy Hips, a belly dancing group.

Another attraction of the festival are the many vendors that have booths around the mall. Aside from the ever present Piato café and Eighty Eight Broadway, many other organizations will be set up. Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will be giving information, as will the Center of Youth and Family Solutions and Pride Wear.

“We’re really looking forward to increase awareness and acceptance of the LGBT community,” said Kevin Bowersox-Johnson, chairperson of the event.

Bowersox-Johnson and other people working on the event are hoping that this event will be larger than it has been years before; and that the attendance will increase – not to say that it has not been large in previous years. Hundreds of people attended the last year, taking advantage of the free buzzcuts and rainbow cupcakes.

“It sounds like a ton of fun, and I hope that I can go,” said Jessica Babb, Sophomore of Danville High School.

Advertisement has also increased in 2012. Flyers and posters have been put up in many local stores, and people seem to be more aware of the festival this year. It is clear by the comments of high school students in central Illinois that they are keen on attending the festivities.

“It’s fantastic how open this generation is to all people,” C-U resident Nora Peal said. “I have few worries for the future.”

Needless to say, C-U Pride Fest 2012 is certain to be a large and exciting event. Full of food, activities, live music, and crafts; it is destined to be a much loved annual event.
