Lubbock County Texas Judge Remarks

Tom Head, the county judge of Lubbock County, Texas, made national headlines last week due to a controversial response to a television show host’s inquiry about a 1.7 cent property tax hike.

According to Head, the tax money is needed to supply the county sheriffs with the equipment they need to be able to fight an insurgent war against Barack Obama and the American government, should he be elected.

Since the comments first made national headlines last week, much has been said on the topic from pundits, politicians, and newsmen alike.

But what do the students of Urbana High School think about Judge Head’s remarks? UHS’ very own school newspaper, The Echo, went to find out.

Junior Sophia Gehrman felt that Head was way out of bounds with his remarks. “First of all, I’m pretty sure you can do that, and second of all, this guy can’t-and doesn’t- represent everyone in Texas!”

Junior Zikang Tong, on the other hand, felt that even if Head managed to garner enough support, the people wouldn’t follow him. “We just ended the Iraq War not too long ago and are on our way out of the war in Afghanistan, I don’t think anyone wants to fight another!”

Senior Adam Bengston was more concerned with the breech of constitutional law that would occur if such a thing would happen. “It won’t happen! It’s just not constitutional,” he told the Echo.

Junior Grant Allen found the whole situation slightly amusing. “I mean, there is no real way this guy could do this. There is no way. Besides, people say stupid things for attention all the time, and I don’t see how this any different. In fact, I actually find this pretty funny.”

But it was Senior Steven Kemball who best typified the feelings of most students at UHS when he told the Echo, “this all seems rather hasty, Obama is not even elected yet! To me, the premise of [Lubbock County and then the United States] taking up arms and fighting all seems really stupid. Just ask the last couple of states who tried!”
