“We do more than just farming,” Troy Cobb, president of FFA, said.
FFA is all about agriculture, and not just farming.
That means FFA talks about careers like livestock, less traditional forms of farming, orchards, business, and even agricultural music.
The name was officially changed from “Future Farmers of America” to “The National FFA Organization” in 1988 to better reflect the broad diversity of agricultural careers FFA includes, Joan White, FFA sponsor, said.
“The point of FFA is to get more people interested in agriculture,” Cobb said.
Every year FFA members can go to a National Convention, where FFA clubs from Hawaii to D.C. to all meet in one location. Last year it was hosted in Indianapolis, and UHS’ FFA club only went for one day of the week long convention.
“[The National Convention] is the best time ever,” Cobb said.
The convention has a lot to offer from meeting people all across the country (including famous guest speakers) to competitions.
The competitions take a lot of hard work, but they are rewarding, some prizes include college scholarships. In addition there is a college fair, which features colleges who have an FFA program.
In short, FFA has something for everyone and looks good on a college application. Getting involved is important for high school students, and FFA is a great thing to get involved with, because agriculture keeps the world running.
The FFA club meets Tuesday mornings and afternoons in Room 1114.
