Having substitutes as a teacher for at least one day or more can feel like a free day. My peers feel as if they do not need to respect the replacement teacher for the day. Ever since grade school, students have been showing little respect for substitute teachers.

Because high school students are assumed to be more mature, it would seem that they would show more respect. However, talking to Urbana High School Junior Brandon Crawson proves this is not the case. Crawson’s perspective on substitutes is that substitutes do not help as much as they probably are required to help and that some substitutes do not care as much as they should. When asked his opinion on substitutes Brandon stated, “It all depends on the substitutes and, of course, what type of person they really are.”

So why do students continue to disrespect the replacement teachers who are taking time out to instruct the class? Student Relations Supervisor, Linda Murphy, provides some insight about this topic. “Because it is not the real teacher. I know when I was younger, we had some students feel as if they do not have to preform the same respect as they do for the original teacher and it was like a free day,” Murphy said.

Having a substitute teacher come in for the day not only affects what the students are doing but also the teacher. “I have a daily plan already written out for the substitute teacher every time a substitute is required,” English teacher Felicia DeFries said.

  1. I don’t know why there is so much disrespect for substitute teachers. They are many great subs in our district that can make “a free day” into a fun-filled educational one. Subs like Mr. Dean or Ms. Tuttle always make class more enjoyable.

  2. I think that this article really opens the eyes of some students and helps them realize that they should start to respect the substitute as if they were their real teacher!

  3. It always bothers me when students don’t give any respect to the subs. The regular teachers always give out a plan and have something planned for the day and the sub always tries their best to deliver the assignment. It’s not that the subs don’t do their jobs, it’s that the students don’t give them a chance to. It’s not fair, to the sub or to the student.
