George St. Pierre (GSP) RUSHFIT is a series of 45, minute workout videos designed to get you into shape and work your entire body. The type of workout featured in the video is used to train for Mixed Martial Arts, also known as MMA, but that is not the only thing it can be used for. Urbana High School uses it in their Personal Development Course.

The course is focused around fitness, and strength and conditioning. This is an alternative to the traditional PE curriculum which addressses a variety of sports and the skills involved in general fitness. The Personal Development sets a high standard on strength and conditioning by addressing the agility, speed, strength and endurance of the participating students. The curriculum is designed to help students make sound choices regarding a healthy lifestyle during and after their high school years.

Urbana High School Football coach, Nathan Watson, started the Personal Fitness course at UHS because the strength and conditioning could empower an athletic team, or just one individual. He felt as if UHS could benefit from this type of empowerment. When Watson first started the program he used P90X and yoga for the days he didn’t have access to the weight room, but this semester he is using the GSP RUSHFIT videos. The GSP RUSHFIT program provides a needed supplement to the traditional weight room at the high school.

Watson said, “The videos give you a full body workout instead of just one particular section.” The videos have become the cornerstone of progress both at a personal and curricular level.

Most register to take the personal development class to either gain more muscle or stay fit during the off season of a sport. Some traditional work out plans do not provide the “whole body” workout consistently that a student needs to reach their athletic potential. The majority of the students like the videos because they give you a variety of techniques and exercises to work the different muscle groups.

Sophmore, Kameron Haley said, “I like the videos because it works all of my muscles.” While it does work a lot of muscles, other students like it becuase it pushes you to keep up and get the workout you should.

This course also has the potential to improve the overall athletic program at the participating school. Consequently, school spirit and school pride could improve and an increased level of involvement in athletic and fitness related activities may result. GSP RUSHFIT has provided student at Urbana High School with the drive and support to achieve personal fitness goals they may have never thought were within reach.
