Urbana’s Sweetcorn festival is a very special event to the community. A lot of teenagers and the rest of the community come together to celebrate the end of summer and beginning of the new school year. They have a lot of different things for all ages. From inflatable for the kids and some crazy teens, to the food, bands, and all the store booths. The festival has been going on for 36 years now and has become a family tradition for a lot of people. Urbana High School student, Sara Smith said she had been going since she was just a baby. There are a lot of different ways to enjoy yourself here. “It’s a good way to learn about agriculture and a fun community events,” says Katie Hanson. She has been running the festival for three years now.

Sweetcorn has a big contribution to this as well. Todd Salen who runs the Corn Yumm, has worked there for 18 years. “It used to be five hours long and only 5,000 people would show up, now it’s two days and over 100,000 people show up every year.” Salen says.

There are many different favorites to the Sweetcorn Festival. “Bouncy houses are the best!” says Smith. Kelsey Smith says the best thing are “FUNNEL CAKES!”

Even though people like everything there, there were some suggestions on what else they should have there: carnival rides, a country or Christian band, more food venders, are just some of it. Also, people want it to be a three-day event. “I like hanging out with my friends,” says Smith. So from the food to the little store, the Sweetcorn Festival seemed like the place to be on August 26 and 27.
