Wiz Khalifa Concert at Assembly Hall
Saturday April 16, the University of Illionis’ Assembly Hall presented Pittsburgh native Wiz Khalifa for the Campus Consciousness Tour. Khalifa didn’t come to Champaign alone either. Along side r Khalifa; rocking the stage was Pittsburgh and Rostrum Record partner Mac Miller. Some may know him by his two explosive solo projects “K.I.D.S” and “Best Day Ever”. As a result, the show was sold out.
“It was like a rollercoaster! I didn’t want to get off. The energy from the show was very hype! I really enjoyed myself,” said Senior Calin Bruett.
“It was EPIC! The music was bangin! And the lights were flashin! I can’t wait till I live the star life!” said Senior Tre Brown.
The 23 year old rap phenomenon Cameron Jibril Thomaz (Wiz Khalifa) was born September 8, 1987 in Minot, North Dakota but was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His first mix tape was released in 2005 tilted “Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania”.
This was an interlude to first official album in 2006 titled “Show and Prove”. The following year, he became a Warner Brothers Records signee and eventually released two mixapes under his Pittsburgh label Rostrum Records titled “Grow Season” and “Prince of the City 2”.
Most people may be familiar with the pop-hip-hop hit “Say Yeah” which jumped rapidly on the charts. Making a perfect leeway to release a mix tape titled “Star Power” in August 2008 and “Flight School” in April 2009 through Rostrum Records. By this time, Khalifa’s career was soaring through Warner Brothers Records and Rostrum Records.
Releasing the explosive collaboration mix tape in August 2009 titled “How Fly” with former Cash Money Records artist from New Orleans, Curren$y. Then after releasing “How Fly”, Khalifa released a mix tape titled “Burn after Rolling’ in November 2009 as an interlude to second album “Deal or No Deal”.
From this point on, Khalifa became “official”. On the cover of XXL magazine as the Top 10 Freshman, he was the 2010 XXL Rookie of the Year (over J.Cole). In April 2010, he released another mix tape titled “Kush and Orange Juice” which was ranked No. 1 on iTunes.
Khalifa has done features for major names in hip-hop such as Rick Ross and Wale. Touring all over the world at this time, Khalifa is said to be “The Man”. In 2011, Wiz released breakout single “Black and Yellow”, ranking No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100.The song appeared on recent album “Rolling Papers” which was released on March 29. This song is now playing in everyone’s ears.
“I like him and his music so much it makes me feel good and I get an emotional high. He’s just himself,” said Bruett
