Meghan Houk, a senior at Urbana High, is an incredible example of persistence and determination, and proves it by being athlete of the month. Her hard work running on the track team has paid off significantly, by getting person bests in both the one mile and the two mile. She inspires each and every one of her teammates, and her coaches see her as a role model for their track team. It’s fair to say that Meghan will be missed a great deal when she graduates.
Although running started as a mere hobby for Meghan, it turned into a love when she joined the cross country and track teams at Urbana High. She told our journalists, “I was eleven years old when I began running. My dad made me join the summer running camp at the middle school, and he told me I could quit after two weeks, but I never did.” It’s a good thing she continued running! Having Meghan on the team has certainly helped UHS‘ track team a lot, and her teammates and coaches are glad that she’s stuck with it. Meghan even said that running has made her a better student, since she can focus more easily in class when she’s been exercising. And she seems to be proud of herself for achieving her goals on the track team this year. She said, “It was super exciting getting athlete of the month! I have been working harder than I ever have in my life, and I was glad that the coaches were proud of me.”
It seems that all of her fellow runners look up to her as well. Glynn Davis, a senior track runner at Urbana, says of Meghan, “Watching her run is so inspirational. She makes it fun for the runners on our team and her competitors in races, because after her events are over, she always tells everyone how well they did. You can tell she really loves running, and watching her do it is an awesome experience.”
Morgan Lovell, a sophomore who runs distance for the track team, says that Meghan is a role model for her. Morgan told our journalists, “She’s the happiest person I’ve ever met, a smile never leaves her face. I look up to her not only because of that, but also because of how dedicated to running she is.”
Unfortunately, Meghan will be graduating this year and taking her legacy as an amazing track runner with her. She has obviously left quite an impact on her track team, and will surely continue to inspire them while she’s away at college.
Ashley Gregory, a sophomore runner, says, “Without Meghan, the team won’t be the same. We will lose one of our favorite seniors ever. She has great values and morals, and I along with the rest of the team can count on her for anything. We’ll miss her.”
