In the past two years, UHS was successful in its yearly blood drives. In an estimate, UHS collected 90 pints of blood in 2009 and 70 pints of blood in 2010. “I’d like to go up to 90 pints [of blood] or above this year,” said UHS Assistant Principal and Athletic Coordinator, Greg Hall. “We’ve been the best in the area the last few years, so I hope we’ll be able to maintain that.”

Hall has been active in the recent years UHS has hosted a blood drive. “I’ve been a part of the last four years,” said Hall. “But the school has already been hosting blood drives for the last 15 years I’ve been here.”

There will be three to four UHS students who will be working and helping out every period during that day. Medical staff from the Community Blood Services will also be involved in the blood donation procedures.

In order to participate in the blood drive, one must be in good health, and weigh at least 110 lbs. “People that are donating should take care of themselves before and after they donate,” said Hall. “They have to make sure they are hydrated and they should not overdo themselves.”

If you are planning on donating blood, remember to eat a meal within 4 hours prior to donating; drink extra water day before and day of donating; bring an ID to the drive; and turn in consent from which is only applicable to 16-year-olds.

To promote the details and importance of the blood drive, UHS has been doing announcements, and there are advertisements and flyers distributed around the school. “I make sure that UHS students and staff will see how important it is,” said Hall. Two to four people benefit from each person that will donate. “It can save a life and it’s also a good way to give back to the society and to help the people that are in a less fortunate conditions than you.”
