Old Hollywood Beauty
Stars of Old Hollywood are praised for their beauty and elegance. Beauty during Old Hollywood was natural. It wasn’t until the end of the 1990s that Hollywood stars started using plastic surgery in order to have “perfect” bodies. There were also no personal trainers and nutritionists to keep the stars in top shape.
Plastic surgery was first practiced in India around 800 B.C. Surgery during this time was used for health reasons and not for cosmetics reasons as it is used now. From that point in, plastic surgery was mainly used for health reasons. Soldiers mainly used it after the World Wars. Plastic surgery did not start to be used for cosmetic reasons until the 1980s when the economy boomed.
During the golden age of Hollywood (1930-1959), stars like Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn and Loretta Young inspired young girls to wear red lipstick, to work on their figure and to own a little black dress. This was a major turning point in society. People became more self-conscious of the way they looked. They started paying attention to their hair, their clothing, their body and even the color of their skins. Women at the time became fashion icons because of their voluptuous bodies and because of their high-fashioned outfits that would now be considered only appropriate for evening parties or important events.
Nowadays, women are considered fashion icons for different reasons. Presently, Lady GaGa is a big fashion icon and she wears meat suit and arrives to the red carpet in an egg. But back in Old Hollywood, people like Marilyn Monroe were considered fashion icons. They were praised for their grace and elegance. These people started trends that have lasted through the test of time like Audrey Hepburn’s famous little black dress from the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Senior Hannah Blaney said, “I love the little black dress because it’s flattering on everyone!” So the truth is that fashion icons have gone from being people with style and elegance to people that are outrageous. Sophomore Bess Pierson said, “ I feel like anyone can be a fashion icon because when you are confident you can pull off anything.”
