Wrestling like many other sports has been around for a while, yet there are lots of people who don’t actually know much about it. A lot of people think of wrestling as WWE or TNA. These two names are a form of wrestling but isn’t the real thing. There are different styles to the sport such as Greco-Roman, Freestyle, and Folkstyle.

Folkstyle also known as collegiate wrestling is very familiar to those who wrestle for a high school or college team. The objective in Folkstyle wrestling is to pin your opponent before time expires. If for whatever reason you are not able to pin the other wrestler you must outscore them in order to achieve the victory. There are different ways to get points, and depending on what you do will result in how many points are rewarded to you.

A high school wrestling match consists of three rounds totaling up to six minutes and overtime if necessary. A match is started when a wrestler and their opponent’s lead foot is on the starting line, facing each other in their stance.

The referee will tell the two wrestlers to shake hands, wrestle, and then the match is underway. In order for them to score they will have to take the other individual down from the neutral position. This is usually from a shot or a throw while having control over the persons hips. This is called a take down and will result in two points to whom ever does this successfully.

The person that was taken down will need an escape or a reversal to receive points to gain control. A reversal is when the wrestler that is covered by the opponent switches the position to where they are now in control. If they are able to switch they’re granted two points.
The wrestler can also get one point if they are successful in returning to the neutral position, which is called an escape. If time has expired and neither wrester has been beaten they will proceed to the second round. Then the referee will flip a colored disk with to dictate how the action will start the round.

They may pick top, bottom, neutral or defer. Whichever one they chose is usually where the wrestlers is the strongest. If they choose defer, they will hold there choice until the third round thus allowing the other wrestler to pick what they want. If time runs out and there is no victor by the end of the third round it will go into overtime. Overtime is only one minute and first score wins, but if no points are scored they will continue to go until the first point is scored.
Currently, the UHS team has demonstrated great ability at the Big 12 conference meet. Shermarke Pettigrew placed first in the 171lb weight class on Junior Varsity, Cameron Mammen placed first in the 160lb weight class, and Joseph Redmon placed third in the 171lb weight class in varsity.

Coach Charles Trabaris has high expectations for the end of the season, “I think this year’s team has a lot going for them. We are a young team with a few seniors in the lineup but we have the talent to make things happen,” he said.
