UHS Beats Centennial in Basketball
It’s been four long years since the Urbana boy’s basketball team defeated Centennial High School. But Urbana clinched the victory on Friday, January 28 with their fans storming the court after the 69-63 win.
Last time the Tigers beat the Chargers was on January 26, 2007, when Urbana High School Dean Travis Coursen was coaching.
Earlier during the day on Friday, when asked if they’re going to win the game and why, Junior Devin Carter said, “Yes, we got the crowd in our side, and we know we’re going to win.” Senior Eric Jamerson said, ”We’re going to win because we’re a better team.”
During the first meeting in the season Tigers lost at Centennial by 9 points. Why didn’t UHS beat the Chargers the first time? Devin Carter stated, “Rebounds and in the beginning of the 3rd quarter we came out soft.” ”It was really disappointing” Jamerson said.
But the second time they matched up again at Urbana, it was a different story for the Chargers. Senior Deonte Jones scored 11 of his total 18 points in the fourth quarter. Jones had eight points in a row to lead the Tigers to their well-deserved win. Carter, who led Urbana in scoring 24 points, and nine points fourth quarter.
It was crazy on the sidelines while each teams fans talked smack to each other during the game. But the tiger’s fans got a hold of them when the Tigers were pretty much winning in the fourth quarter.
After a long wait beating the two-time defending conference champs Centennial the fans flooded the court even though there were advise not too.
“Feels real good, like a heavy weight lifted off our chest. We wanted to beat them real bad knowing that Urbana varsity hasn’t beat them in a long time,” Senior Larry Green said after the game. This win meant a lot for Urbana because of how hard they worked to get it. This was certainly the most hyped game of the Tiger’s season and Urbana proved victorious against cross-town rivals the Chargers.
