Girls Swimming Participates in Food Pantry Effort
On the evening of Wednesday, October 20th 2010, swimmers on the Urbana and Uni. High girls’ teams came to the Wesley United Methodist Church located at 1203 West Green Street in Urbana in order to sort nonperishable food and other essential grocery items. This makes it easier for people in need that come to the Wesley Evening Food Pantry, which is held every third Thursday of the month, to find items. Each person who comes in need of food for financial reasons receives enough food for a week for themselves and each member of their family. The girls moved boxes of canned goods, granola bars, dry pasta, household cleaning supplies, and baby supplies from one room to signs posted throughout the church where specific foods were to be placed. Along with Coach Stephanie Sherman, the Urbana swimmers who helped included: Lani Belton, Kirsten Slaughter, Maggie Taylor, Jenny Hill, Athena Lin, Leah Berti, and Kolbi Williford. In less than two hours the foods were sorted thanks to the help of all the parents, swimmers, and members of the church who volunteered and donated money to the food pantry. The Urbana girls managed to collect $70.77 on the evening of the meet against Uni and Schlarmann and even more in the following days to benefit the food pantry so that it can buy more food for the hungry families in the area.
