October Athletes of the Month
This month’s athletes of the month were Seniors Meghan Houk (Cross-Country) and Adam Blackman (Soccer). Houk broke the school record running an 18:39 for three miles. She has also placed in almost all of her meets as was Twin City Champion. Blackman broke the school record for the most goals, career 50 and season 26. He has led team to a 16-3 record and first place in the Big Twelve Conference. I had the chance to interview both Megan and Adam and cam up with this interesting information.
MEGHAN HOUK
Meredith P. Headtke( MPH): What was your initial reaction when you found out that you were athlete of the month?
Meghan M. Houk ( MMH): Well, I was sitting in stats next to Adam, and we were both real surprised when they said both of our names. It was exciting though.
MPH: What was it like to break the school record?
MMH: I was really excited because breaking the record was a goal I have had since I was a freshman. I had gotten really close a couple of times both last year and two years ago, and it was great to finally break it.
MPH: How does a cross country race work?
MMH: Well, there is usually one varsity race for girls, so all the teams put in up to seven runners, and we all run at the same time. The race is three miles long, and it’s real hard.
MPH: What do you like about cross country?
MMH: Cross country is really a mental sport. You not only have to train real hard during the season, but you also have to be real tough. I love racing and seeing how hard I can push myself. Also, I have the best coaches and team. Coach Breit and Coach Hunt always are trying to make us better, and Meredith and Nicole have been running with me since middle school, and we have so much fun together.
MPH: How long have you been running?
MMH: I started running the summer before my sixth grade year, because my dad made me. At first I was really mad at him, but now I am so thankful. This is my seventh year of organized running, and I plan to have at least four more.
MPH: What are your plans for college?
MMH: I’m looking into four different colleges right now: Anderson, Greenville, Olivet, and Wheaton. I am for sure going to run at one of them, but right now I have no idea which one I’ll pick. They are all Christian colleges, but they are also pretty different. I am going to major in social work, and minor in cross cultural missions, because when I grow up, I just want to love Jesus and help kids, in the United States and all over the world.
ADAM BLACKMAN
Meredith Headtke (MH): What was your initial reaction when you found out you were athlete of the month?
Adam Blackman (AB): I was happy and proud of the accomplishment. I wanted to know who the female athlete was; I was more excited when Megan won.
MH: How did it feel to break the school record?
AB: Honestly I didn’t care I broke it (school record) because I was more focused on winning the game.
MH: What position do you play?
AB: I play center-mid and sometimes get moved to forward.
MH: How does it feel to have your father coach you?
AB: I enjoy it, we get along fine, and he is a good coach.
MH: What are your plans for college?
AB: My plans for college are to attend a four year university and play soccer.
