Urbana Tigers Football Update
The Urbana Tigers are coming off a hard 0-9 season last year. They are looking to capitalize on 106 hours of hard work on the summer off-season. Sophomore quarterback Cameron Mammen is looking healthier than ever, and is hoping to have his breakout season. Urbana has had some tough losses to start out the season against #1 ranked team Danville, cross town rivals Champaign Central, and fifth ranked team Normal Community. Urbana runs a 3-5-3 defense, which consists of 3 defensive linemen, 5 linebackers, and 3 defensive backs. Coach Watson calls their defense the heart and soul of the team. Kameron Fry says, “Our defense is improving every week because we are trusting each other more, and we are doing our job.”
“I feel like the referees calls toward the Urbana High School football team were obviously unfair and uneven,” said fellow fan Avery Queen
However they are looking past that and only moving forward. The team will have three straight home games, and are looking to spark a winning streak. They are aspiring to have a 6-3 record, and hopefully make a playoff appearance. They want to make history and be the first Urbana High School football team to win a playoff game. Team captain Justin Brown says, “After all of the hard work we put in, we truly believe that there could be history in the making. All of us want to make it to the playoffs, and we are willing to do anything to achieve that dream.” So come out and support your Urbana Tigers on September 24 against the Mattoon Greenwave, and on October 1 for the homecoming game against cross-town rival Champaign Centennial.
