Fall Fashion Week
September and October, it would seem, are the months where it would be wise to begin pulling out your sweaters or trying to find the perfect pair of boots. For the fashion world, however, September and October are nearly the opposite. It is now the time to begin looking forward to Spring and Summer with Fashion Week. New York is the first fashion week and was held from September 9 through 16, it is followed by London, Paris, and Milan. This year hosted many great collections from Marc by Marc Jacobs to Marchesa, Lela Rose to Lanvin. The following is a small sampler of the talent seen at the S/S 2011 shows.
Anna Sui
This collection had a definite Woodstock vibe to it, and it certainly maintained Sui’s trademark cheeriness. The majority of the looks were worn with boots, something that may come as a surprise for a spring/ summer collection, but definitely worked. Expect to see this trend next summer, especially at music festivals and other laid back venues. Another feature of the show was the breezy chiffon fabric used for many of the looks. The fabric was used in a variety of prints, from paisley to floral, which enhanced the bohemian feel of the collection.
Marc by Marc Jacobs
This year’s Marc by Marc Jacobs collection showed a myriad of stripes and soft looking sweaters. Although the hair was a little wonky, the overall collection was youthful and fun. The bright colors and mix of knit and silky fabric provided the perfect combination. One of the stand-out looks for me was an orange and grey sweater dress layered over a lighter knit white and blue shirt topped off with heavy bangles, a brown leather bag, and army green shoes.
Tommy Hilfiger
For his 25th year in the business, Tommy Hilfiger went all out with the country club Americana style he is known for. Red, white, and blue were, of course, reoccurring throughout the collection, but plenty of other vibrant colors hit the runway. Two mainstay items were eyelet shorts and blazers, which were seen in several looks. Personal favorites of mine were the final two dresses. The simplicity of the gowns made them impeccable, not to mention completely elegant and wearable.
Lanvin
As is always expected of the design house, Lavin was incredibly glamorous and luxurious. Although this year’s collection had nice day pieces, the night wear was the real stunner. The one shouldered dresses, shown both in red and black, were truly elegant. However, the true show-stopper was the first piece to walk down the runway. From the fluttering long grey skirt to the tan top complete with glittering neck-line detail- the look was impeccable. The entire collection was interesting, each look would catch your eye, despite the lack of prints in the majority of the collection.
Lela Rose
Lela Rose produced a great collection- the day-wear was spunky and fresh, while the night-wear was sophisticated. The clothes in general were exceptionally light, perfect for a Spring/ Summer collection. One of the particularly great looks was the knee-length, strapless off-white gown. The top was done in a lingerie style with detail on the bust line, the bottom had a subtle striped print and was shorter in the front. Each detail perfectly enhanced the dress. To top off every look of the collection stylists chose a messy side braid.
Marchesa
Each look in the Marchesa Spring/ Summer 2011 collection was a piece of art. Marchesa’s awe-inspiring looks often show up on the red carpet, and the same should certainly be expected from this collection. So much detail was put into each design and each design is so well designed that it’s difficult to choose which one’s stand out. The item in the collection was a gown and was either white, black, tan, violet, deep purple or a mixture of several of those colors.
