UHS Students Start Film Club
If you are an Urbana High School student interested in movies, then the new Film Club is perfect for you. The club will not only be devoted to watching movies, but discussing them as well.
The club will chose a genre each month and, as a group, vote for several titles. The titles are most voted for will be watched by club members that month. Since there will likely not be enough time to watch each movie at school, members will watch some at home alone or meet up at someone’s house to watch.
Senior Nick Morse and some of his friends initially came up with the idea for the club last year. Junior Umberto Ravaioli was an early supporter of Morse’s plans. “The president [Morse] is pretty cool,” says Ravaioli. “He pitched the idea to me last year and I thought that it was pretty cool, so I promised to come.”
Michael Pollock and Jeff Davis, both History Department teachers, are co-sponsors of Film Club. Pollock also teaches the American Film and Music class offered at UHS. Due to his involvement in the subject, he has a small library of film critique books that the club may use as the year progresses.
However, he puts emphasis on the little involvement that the sponsors have in what the club wants to do.“It’s really a student driven thing,” Pollock says.
At the club’s last meeting, on September 1, they finalized decisions on which movies they want to watch. The club’s first genre is Sci-Fi. Members will watch The Day the Earth Stood Still on September 29 and 2001 at home.
