“Crank” Book Review
Kristina was the perfect daughter, never did anything wrong. Straight A’s. No detentions. Nothing was ever wrong. Always had her head on her shoulders and never caught in the rush of being in trouble. Kristina’s story takes you into the mind, life, and choices of a meth addict. Kristina’s addiction paints a mental picture with splats of gritty honesty that nobody would want to share. Kristina’s story and her dilemmas will shock you and leave you begging for more. Part of this story is based on a true story, and when you know that it leaves you wondering what all this was actually like. Hopkins puts the feelings into each word and thought that flows through Kristina’s brain.
Hopkins writing is something completely different from regular writing…the words literally create pictures either literally or if you read them in a different way then it pieces together a different sentence to give you a look into Kristina’s meth induced alter ego charged thoughts. Kristina changes through-out the book and I think it actually gives you a look into a meth addicts mind, it definitely makes people think twice about doing drugs…of any kind, because Kristina tries a little of everything.
This book was an excellent book and I have read it 4 times. It is very powerful, the way Hopkins writes is just amazing, and you can’t stop reading. You get put into the story and it hits you right in the heart, it brings tears and some rage into your soul. It is an amazing novel and it has an amazing sequel. Kristina is an example to all kids around who know what it’s like. I recommend this to anyone looking for a great read; I recommend all Ellen Hopkins books. If you want to find out the rest of Kristina’s life story, and gritty past memories pick this up and get reading. Now you can see what it all becomes when you mix it all together.
