Girl’s Soccer
The Urbana High School Girls varsity soccer team has started off with a perfect record 3-0. They lost five starting seniors last year, including goalie Aubrey Morse, but that has not stopped them from being successful. After winning the regional title last year the team is hoping to do the same this year.
The team’s first game was against Mattoon on March 30 where the Tigers won 1-0 with Senior Gretchen Booth scoring the goal. “I think for our first game we played really well, ” said Junior Moriah Ward.
Thursday the Lady Tigers had another home game, this time against Monticello. Sophomore Melinda Mendoza and Senior Kelsey Choquette scored for another victory 2-0. “Most girls were gone over spring break so we had only a few days of practice before our games so it was great to win,” said Mendoza.
While braving Saturday’s rain storm the Tigers brought home another victory beating Danville. Kelsey Choquette scored again from an assist from Junior McKenzie Kirby to give the Tigers their third straight win 1-0. “The more we play in games the better we will get, the team is playing hard and strong and we can be competitive with any team,” said Head Coach Craig Huff.
Sadly the girls winning streak ended after they tied 1-1 with Uni on April 6. “Uni had a fast offense, so our defense worked hard to hold them and keep the ball on their half as much as we could,” said Sophomore Goalie Christie Stark.
The girl’s next game is Thursday April 8 at the home soccer field against Central at 4:15 p.m. Come out and support the Lady Tiger’s soccer team.
